Web Site Tips for Webmasters
General
There are many things to remember as you design your site. Here are some
of the overall good things to remember that will help you as you go:
- Find something to draw people back to your site for a repeat visit--people
will not be drawn to a site if the content does not change. Once
they are done looking at your content, they will have no reason to come
back.
- Size your page for 800 x 600 pixel screen resolution--most
people browsing the internet use a resolution of at least 800 x 600 (many
higher). Actually, the best way is to allow your pages to
grow/shrink with the browser to allow for a "full screen" view for all
visitors.
- Check your page appearance in more than one browser--unfortunately,
all browsers do not respond uniformly to web pages. It can be rather
embarrassing to find out a page you made looks messy in a different
browser. I know.
- Free sites can drive away people if they include pop-up advertising--some
sites drive visitors away with pop-ups. This is something to keep in
mind, especially if your organization is on a site that has pop-ups
promoting something that you do not endorse.
- If you have scripts running on your site, make sure they run correctly
- Use frames sparingly
- Check your content for accuracy
- Avoid the centered-column look
- Know at least a little HTML and CSS
